Oh! Sorry, I never answered that part...

No, no - all the books that were here before the Google Books were uploaded are all still there. It's just the amount of Google Books (previously there were about 500,000 books on the archive - with the Google ones it is now over a million) seems to have been, as you say, lost in the mass. When searching just put your query in rounded brackets and add 'NOT google' at the end within the brackets.
Like this, without the quotes:
"((search terms go here in their own sub-brackets) NOT google)"

I should have also said, that the above method of searching excludes the Google books leaving only the 'native' books and collections.

I am too hasty with the 'submit post' button these days...

To get all the Henry James related books (minus Google and Gutenberg) you would need this search:

mediatype:(texts) -scanner:google -contributor:gutenberg AND (subject:"James, Henry 1843-1916" OR creator:"James, Henry, 1843-1916" OR creator:"Henry James" OR title:"Henry James" OR description:"Henry James")

(cut and paste into the 'Search' field)
